Governance in Liberia and Sierra Leone: "The biggest success story...this year"

Mo Ibrahim praised the striking improvements made by two of AGI’s partner governments – Liberia and Sierra Leone – in overall governance quality at the launch of the 2011 Ibrahim Index of African Governance.

“We are very pleased with two countries which came out of conflicts – namely Liberia and Sierra Leone, who show improvement in all categories, and that’s wonderful...That is the biggest success story actually this year, ” said Ibrahim

Liberia, where AGI has been working since 2010 has made the greatest improvement of all  African countries over the last five years, improving this year across all four categories, including safety and rule of law, participation and human rights, sustainable economic opportunity and human development.

Sierra Leone, where we began working in 2008, made the single greatest improvement in the last 12 months, again improving across all four categories.

And Rwanda, AGI’s first partner government, also made impressive strides, climbing six spots in the rankings from 31 in 2010 to 25 in 2011, with a score higher than the continental average.

The results are a testament to the leadership shown by the governments of each country in striving to develop their countries politically as well as socially and economically.

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation is an organisation that supports good governance and great leadership in Africa. The Ibrahim Index of African Governance provides full details of countries performance across four categories of governance: Safety & Rule of Law, Participation & Human Rights, Sustainable Economic Opportunity and Human Development. It is now in the 5th year of the Index publication.
