Rwanda Remembers: 17th Genocide Commemoration

AGI’s Patron Tony Blair today joined Rwanda in commemorating the 17th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, in which over 800,000 people lost their lives.  The Commemoration Day ceremony due to take place in Kigali on Thursday 7th April is part of an annual national mourning week to remember the victims of the 1994 genocide.

In a video address (above), Mr Blair remarked on just how far Rwanda has come in the short 17 years since the conflict, thanks to the ‘hard work, determination and compassion of its remarkable people’.

Looking to the next stage in Rwanda’s development journey, he said,

“Rwanda’s future is in its own hands. In recognition of this, the Rwandan government is rethinking its capacity building strategy, in partnership with AGI and other development bodies, to ensure that development efforts are focussed on the government’s priorities.”

AGI’s team of public and private sector experts work in partnership with counterparts in the Rwandan government, developing their capacity to implement reforms set out in “Vision 2020”  This strategy sets out the Rwandan government’s ambition to take charge of its own development, and achieve the status of a middle-income country within the next 10 years.
