Tony Blair today welcomed the appointment of the "exceptional" Baroness Amos as the new United Nations humanitarian affairs chief.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Amos, 56, would be the new Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief. As UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair appointed her as the first black woman to serve in the Cabinet and she currently serves as UK High Commissioner to Australia.

Tony Blair said: "This is an exceptional appointment by the UN Secretary General. I've known Valerie for many years and I am absolutely certain that she will bring the experience, knowledge and leadership required for such an important role.

"She was an exceptional member of my Cabinet and will be a real credit to the United Nations."
