Quartet Envoys and Tony Blair call on Israelis and Palestinians to hold direct talks

The Middle East Quartet "stressed the important objective of a direct exchange between the parties without delay or preconditions," in a statement issued following the latest round of meetings with Israelis and Palestinians.
The envoys, representing the United Nations, Russia, the United States and the European Union, and Tony Blair met the parties at separate meeting in Jerusalem today.
"Quartet Envoys and Quartet Representative Tony Blair met today in Jerusalem with the parties separately," said a statement released by the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Robert Serry.
"They reiterated the September 23 statement by Quartet Principals and stressed the important objective of a direct exchange between the parties without delay or preconditions beginning with a preparatory meeting and leading to the presentation of proposals on territory and security.
"The envoys reiterated the call for the parties to create a conducive environment for restarting talks and urged the parties to refrain from provocative actions."
The statement concluded that the "envoys remain engaged and committed to assisting the parties resume direct negotiations to achieve a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace in the Middle East."
