Tony Blair and President Zapatero highlight the importance of resuming Middle East peace talks
Thursday, Jun 02, 2011 in Office of the Quartet Representative
The President of the Government of Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, received the Quartet Representative, Tony Blair, at Moncloa Palace on Thursday, 2 June.
At the meeting, the two men discussed various issues related to the regional situation in the Middle East and North Africa, in particular the so-called "Arab Spring" political process and the outlook for the peace process between Israel and Palestine.
Tony Blair, the Quartet Representative to the Middle East, expressed his opinions to the President of Spain regarding the peace process in light of the reconciliation between the Palestinian factions as well as recent keynote speeches from US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Both President Zapatero and Tony Blair highlighted the importance of the Quartet as an instrument to help resume peace talks.
President Zapatero and Tony Blair also expressed their conviction that the pro-democratic reform movements in Arab countries represent a great opportunity to modernise those societies and strengthen cooperation links between the European Union and its Mediterranean partners.
