Quartet Representative Tony Blair today welcomed the parties' announcement that they would join the start of direct talks on September 2nd.
Commenting on the Israeli and Palestinian agreement to go to Washington DC, Mr. Blair, who will also attend along with the leaders of Egypt and Jordan, said:
"I very much welcome today's statements by the parties that they intend to start negotiations without delay, which is crucial if we want to make progress in the peace process.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Senator Mitchell, who has worked tirelessly to get to the point where direct negotiations can begin. We will continue to support him as the talks progress.
"I and my team will also continue to work with both the Israelis and Palestinians to develop the bottom-up process in order to build up the institutions and economy of the West Bank and Gaza and improve the daily lives of Palestinians, in support of the political negotiations.
"With the resumption of talks, I hope that more can now be done to accelerate the process of change on the ground."
