Get Going Get Rowing - Students take part in Indoor Rowing Finals in Durham

240 rowers participated in the Get Going Get Rowing Indoor Rowing County Final yesterday at Maiden Castle in Durham.

The competition, launched last year saw the culmination of a lot of training and hard work by all the students taking part from schools around the County.  Competition in indoor rowing is fun and it provides a great form of exercise, motivation and encourages competitive interest.

In 2009, a partnership between Competition Managers, SUNEE, British Rowing and the Tony Blair Sports Foundation was established with Concept 2 providing rowing machines to enable the partnership to deliver an Indoor Rowing Competition Programme for Schools.

Over the last 6 months, 7,000 students in 20 secondary schools across County Durham have taken part in Intra-School competitions with the best rowers going on to represent their school in this County Final.  The students competed on rowing machines that are wired up to a live projection which creates a great spectacle and adds to the student’s excitement of the event.

Lynn Fellows a parent of one of the competitors says:

“This is the first time that Chloe has taken part in this sort of event.  She has only been indoor rowing since October and it has increased her confidence enormously.  She has had a great time and a lot of fun.  We are so pleased that she has come first in her category and are very proud of her achievement.  Chloe is keen to continue with indoor rowing and this form of exercise and we hope she will have the opportunity to do so.”

The North East final event will be held in March and will provide the chance for our regions top young rowers from County Durham, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and Teesside to compete against each other to win the title.

Simon Dickie, Youth and Community Manager for British Rowing says:

"It was great to see such a high quality event being run by a wide range of partners. They should all be very proud of what they have achieved.  The young people did extremely well and if their happiness could be measured by the volume of cheering, then they were certainly having a great time!”

Since its launch the Tony Blair Sports Foundation has recruited and trained 39 new rowing coaches who all now volunteer their time in local schools and rowing clubs across the region.
