“Every Player Counts” disability football coaching and league is launched

Durham FA in partnership with SAFC, Durham County Council, Stockton Borough Council, Stockton Town FC, Hartlepool Borough Council, Hartlepool United FC, Gateshead Council, EDC and The Tony Blair Sports Foundation have launched a disability football project which will run on week days and is for 16+ years male and females with disabilities.

Each host venue will run a 4 week coaching block and then continue on to develop a weekly 5 –a-side league for participants. All venues will then come together on a quarterly basis and play a larger festival based competition which will allow the services to interact.

At the moment the project is unable to accommodate Wheelchair users or Blind participants in the league, but will work to support them in the coaching sessions or help them look for areas in which they would like to support/participate until further developments can be made to create a wider provision.

The mid-term plan of the project will be to select participants who are willing and able to progress on to FA Level 1 coaching qualifications or becoming qualified referees supporting not only their local weekly league/sessions but also the North East Ability Counts Junior and Adult leagues. The project will look to organise these courses for early 2012 once the leagues are settled and established, and participants have had the opportunity to decide if that is an area they would be keen to further develop.
