Tony Blair starts Great North Run to raise funds for sports foundation

Tony Blair was joined by Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington, Olympic cyclist Chris Hoy and Paralympian swimmer Ellie Simmons at the start of the 2008 Great North Run as 100 runners took part to raise funds for the Tony Blair Sports Foundation.

Mr Blair congratulated all the runners taking part and thanked all those raising funds for the Tony Blair Sports Foundation. He also praised race founder and sports foundation supporter Brendan Foster on making the event a success.

He said: "Brendan has done the most amazing job and the Great North Run is now one of the big events worldwide. There are thousands of people running and I think they are going to raise about £10m for charity, which is utterly incredible."
