YES These Girls Can Run!Wednesday, Feb 10, 2016 in Sports Foundation
The Foundation has been working with Kim Scott who set up These Girls Can Run just over a year ago. In our catch up meeting with Kim today it was great to hear about how much she has achieved, Her enthusiasm and passion for what she does is infectious and we are so proud of how far she has come in such a short time. Kim’s own story and reasons for getting into running will be one that many women recognise.
Kim told us:
“Throughout my late teens and early twenties I was overweight, unfit and unhappy. I was too scared of being laughed at or judged to join a gym and soon became bored of exercising at home alone, so I decided to give running a try. I used to wait until it was dark to go out so that no one saw me but bit by bit I started to realise that with the right mindset and a little bit of determination I could run. As I started to lose weight my confidence grew and I began to fall in love with running. Now, numerous 5km, 10km, half marathons and a marathon later I wanted to use my experience to help other ladies."
Kim set up her 1st running group in Cramlington and in just over 12 months has 10 groups organising running sessions across our region where she welcomes women who can get fit and healthy by running or walk/jogging in a sociable, safe and supportive environment without fear of being judged or left behind.
“When I first set up These Girls Can Run I soon realised that not only was it about the ladies who plucked up the courage to come along and give running a try, but it was also about all of those other ladies out there who got in touch to say they wanted to come and give it a try but were just too scared. I wanted to make my groups accessible to ALL ladies and I have built on my own experiences to develop the groups into the friendly, welcoming and supportive groups they are today.”
Over the past year the Foundation has supported and funded 4 of Kim's ladies to become qualified Leaders in Running Fitness. Because of the massive increase in members we have agreed to fund a further 4 ladies to take the course over the next 12 months. Having more qualified Leaders means more ladies can sign up and more groups can get started.
For any ladies wanting to get out and run but don't know where to start, get in touch with Kim who will be happy to talk to you http://thesegirlscanrun.weebly.com/
