Young Gateshead Harriers Lift The Tony Blair Sports Foundation Sprint Trophy
Thursday, Sep 04, 2008 in Sports Foundation
A team of young Gateshead Harriers lifted the Tony Blair Sports Foundation Sprint Trophy just moments before the star-studded Aviva British Grand Prix at Gateshead International Stadium.
The runners saw off competition from young Birtley and Blaydon athletes over a range of sprints from 100 to 800 metres.
They were then given track-side seats to watch the meeting which included British Olympic medallists Christine Ohuruogu, Phillips Idowu, Germaine Mason, and Tasha Danvers along with some of the world's best from Beijing.
Jeanette Pickard, Chief Executive of the TBSF, said:
"Although Gateshead won this event I would like to thank all the athletes and the volunteer coaches for taking part in this inaugural event. It was superb to see these young runners competing on the same track as some of the world's top athletes, and you never know one of them one day may be competing at this level."
